Problems printing from a VM

$

I have a client with several remote branches.  They are running Windows 7 machines locally and then use the internet to connect to a server here in Columbus, Ohio.  They log into Virtual machines hosted on a Server 2008 R2.  The VM's are all Windows 7.  One of my clients is trying to use a Canon 430MX series printer.  It installed and runs perfectly locally. It used to work fine in the VM but the settings were lost and the one who originally set it up is no longer here.

The problem is in the VM.  I set the Remote Desktop Manager locally to share printers, drives, ports, etc.  When I try to install the printer in the VM it will not pick up the printer and will not recognize the USB port.  I have tried to install it as a network printer.  The VM doesn't see it.

I feel like I am missing something simple.

Any suggestions

Has anyone had this problem?

Screensaver on RDS 2012 (is there alternative software or solution)

$

Hi

We have a large number of Thin Clients in our production running Windows 7 Embedded. We would like to use these to share information from Management and production updates (changing daily). Out Thin Clients connect to an RDS2012 server and since we run 24/7, they are only turned off if they freeze up or we experience a power failure. I've been trying to set a screensaver showing pictures from a specific folder, but as others have discovered, this is not possible from Windows Server 2008 and up.

So the natural question would be: What can I do? Is there any software I can buy that can help me achive my goal or can I do something on the Thin Clients!?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks a lot
Carsten

RemoteApp making Dynamics AX go crazy

$

Hi

We use RemoteApp for distributing Dynamics AX and it works great and with a lot less hassle than RDS when logging in for the users. However, we sometime get a strange problem, it's like someone it tapping the ALT button continuously (see video). Sometimes it stops on its own, other times we have to close the RemoteApp and restart it. The problem mostly occurs when going into a windows in AX that pulls data from many sources (that seems to be the common denominator, but we're not 100% sure).

Anyone with the same issue and a solution?

Thanks

i have a small business accounting application which is designed to run in an RDP type of environment (programs and data reside on single server, user's pcs access either internally(eithernet) or externally(via internet) using an RDP connection.  does the new SBS 2011 allow for this?   if so, which version and want if any additional CAL's will be needed so i can get a handle on the entire cost..

if SBS 2011 still limits this type of client access via RDP, which version of the latest MS server os offerings is the least expensive and again, which additional CAL's must i purchase..

thanks

How do I change the URL to the Remote Web Access server in Windows Server 2012?

Hallo!

I have set up a Remote Dexktop Service using the "Quick" deployment method in Server Manager and everything is working greate internally, but I cannot start an app published in Remote Web Access from outside our network.

The problem is that it wants to start the using the internal URL, for example, server.domain.local, instead of the external one, for example remote.server.com.

I therefore want to know how I can change the default URL for the Remote Web Access server and all the Remote Web Apps in Windows Server 2012?

I have allready looked in Server Manager and I can change some of the deployment settings in server manager, but there is no way to alter the URL of the Remote Web Access server. See below images:

Edit deployment step 1

Edit deployment step 2 try to change the url

Pressing the internal URL only results in opening the internal URL.

This was very simple to do in Windows Server 2008 R2 using the tsconfig tool, but it does not seam to be any way of solving this in server manager.

A possible sollution would be to alter the registry someware in HKLM->Software->Microsoft->Windows NT->Terminal Services. But this can easaly lead to problems due to wrong format, etc. and is probably not supported.

Is there a simpler and supported way?

Smart Card Logon Event ID 5, 7, & 17 - An error occurred while retrieving a digital certificate from the inserted smart card

We are having a lot of event id 5 smart card logon issues on 2008 R2 server.

We are using Active Client 6.2.0.119, we also tried patch 120, 124, and 126.

Here are some of the errors we are getting...

Event ID 5  -  Smart Card Logon

1. An error occurred while retrieving a digital certificate from the inserted smart card. An internal error has been detected, but the source is unknown.

2. An error occurred while retrieving a digital certificate from the inserted smart card. The smart card has been reset, so any shared state information is invalid.

3. An error occurred while retrieving a digital certificate from the inserted smart card. The security token does not have storage space available for an additional container.

4. An error occurred while retrieving a digital certificate from the inserted smart card. The Smart card resource manager is not running.

Event ID 7  -  Smart Card Logon

1. An error occurred while signing a message using the inserted smart card: An internal error has been detected, but the source is unknown.

2. An error occurred while signing a message using the inserted smart card: An internal error has been detected, but the source is unknown.

Event ID 17  -  Smart Card Logon

1. An error occurred while decrypting a message: An unexpected card error has occurred.

Why is 2008 R2 having so many errors with smart cards?

Any Ideas out there?

Remotedesktop Connection Broker third party choise for load balancing

$

With the remotedesktop connection broker the reconnect to a farm goes to the correct server where an old session exists. But if no session is found on all servers (session directory) the broker choise a server from the farm (load balancing) to use by the remotedesktop client. I've read it's able to use third party software for that.

At this time we have a remote app running on one server. Now we want to build a farm with some servers. But in our situation there are many factors to choise a user to the correct server. So is it possibility to integrate a module or skript into the broker for that server choise?

At this time i don't found anything. So if anyone know something please let it me know.

Have Per User and Per Device, how to manage my remote access?

 Hi.

I had a windows 2008 R2 x64 and setup my RD, I start with 5 license Per-Device, but I got more users, my seller sold to me another 5 licenses but Per-User.

I add my Per-User licenses done, status:

Per-Device 5 available 0 ok

Per-User 5 available generate report issue "-"

Now, in total I had 8 user, 5 of are using Per-device, now how can I force the others to take the Per-User licenses?

Before I add more license, the users could access the server, but some of them where using the temporal license, do I need to delete something in the server and user side?

Any input will be appreciated, thanks!!!

NOTE: My server is not part of a windows Domain is a Domain under Linux.

Specify Connection URL Problem

OK, I am trying to get file associations working on windows 8 clients. We have a 2008 R2 DC and a 2012 RDS server. I am following:

 http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh831442.aspx

and here is where the problem exists:

Enable the default connection URL using Group Policy

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

To enable the default connection URL using Group Policy

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1.
Log on to the domain controller as the CORP\Administrator user account.

2.
On the domain controller, open Group Policy Management. Click Start, type Group Policy Management, and then click Group Policy Management..

3.
Expand Forest: corp.contoso.com, and expand Domains, and then expand corp.contoso.com.

4.
Right-click Default Domain Policy, and then click Edit.

5.
Navigate to User Configuration -> Policies ->Administrative Templates -> Windows Components -> Remote Desktop Services -> RemoteApp and Desktop Connections.

6.
Double-click Specify Default Connection URL, and then click Enabled.

7.
In the Default Connection URL box, type https://RDWA1.corp.contoso.com/RDWeb.

8.
Click OK.

Step 5 on our 2008 DC we do not have a "RemoteApp and Desktop Connections" entry and so in step 6, needless to say, we dont have "Specify Default Connection URL"! How does one set "Specify Default Connection URL" on 2008 R2 Ent?

HowTo - 2012 - VDI Personal Desktop

Hi,

Its been a nighmare. Iam stuck!

MyEnv:

- Migrated AD 2008 R2 (from 2003)

- Server 2012, fresh install, joined to domain

- Win8 VM sysprep(ed)

I added RD roles (standard, ONE box) but when I try to add Collection (personal):

    - It just says: RD -- Task details -- Creating ... but never ends.

    - Sometimes I got ... can't connect using Remote Communication Windows Powershell or something

In Hyper-V manager I can see my base-VM and the other one with just the Win8's Llogin-Screen thumbnail. So I click it and tried to login manually but got:

    - There's no Session Host available ..

- Right now Iam adding SessionHost rol to see what happen

- Is there any special permission in AD that should I set?

- Is there any issue if I just using One-Box (1server) for all?

- Why it never finish create the collection?

Windows 2008 R2 - RDP session - Clipboard/Copy/Paste function stripping files during transfer....

$

Hello all,

Im currently working on a project where I have to built and prepare three VM's hosting 2008R2 server on a group of server appliances configured as a SAN.

One of the issues I currently have which has put a stop to proceedings is RDP sessions with the VM's from a WindowsXP Pro laptop stripping files during file transfer.

The summary is as follows: I can only access the VM's through RDP or VMWare client console session. In the console session I have no ability to stranfer software for installation, additionally the Dell Poweredge hardware Im working with doesnt register any USB Flash storage devices when plugged in. That leaves the RDP connection to transfer the necessary software for installation server side.

I have succesfully managed to transfer various small files in their native format including AdobeX.exe (pdf reader) server side, then install successfully.

Trying to transfer a zipped or unpacked variants of a 2.05GB sized software installation ISO of a piece of software which is required to be hosted on the servers however is not copying files like for like. At first I didn't notice that the file size of the folder and underlying structure had been reduced so when running the software installation package a number of pre-requisite software steps were unavailable but the core software and services installed ok. Once it was discovered that the installation missed a number of required steps I had to uninstall and figure out what had gone wrong.

I tried to transfer the folder again but on completion the 2.05GB file had been reduced to 500MB! So obviously sub-folders and files have been stripped during the process. I then tried it with a zipped ISO version and that also reduced the overall file size during the transfer.

Renaming file extensions (.exe to .txt, etc) didnt make any difference. Firewall has been disabled during this process to remove it from the equation. Clipboard in RDP session host manager is enabled and Im using the local admin account to log in to the RDP session. The servers are not going to be part of an AD/Domain therefore each hosting appliance is being set up as a standalone and part of a workgroup, no special security policy and/group permissions have been applied from default, so I dont think this factors in, but I could be wrong.

Any ideas as to why this is happening? I'm not aware that there is a file size limit when using the clipboard, is this the cause perhaps?

Any help will be much appreciated.

Kind Regards

Redirect Serial Ports

We currently have Citrix servers.
I am testing TS 2008 as a possible replacement.
We have several thin clients that have gauges attached to the serial ports.
Sometimes they lose the ability to communicate, and we use a batch file to reset the port mapping:
net use com1: /d
net use com2: /d
net use
net use com1: \\client\com1:
net use com2: \\client\com2:
net use

This does not seem to work with TS 2008.  When I run it, I get a "System error 1200 has occurred."

Is there an equivalent command I can use with TS2008?

Windows 2012 RDS using User Disk Profile

Hi,

We are having some issues when we log in to our servers. When we login the 1st time, we are getting the metro start menu how is suppose to be but, the next time we log in we received a blank metro start.

I was checking the local profile (c:\users\username) and the type of the local profile are "File Folder" instead of "Mounted volume". I don't know why is doing this. I created a new user and I am not applying any group policy and it is creating the vhdx file as a file folder type instead Mounted volume.

Does anyone is having this issue?

Let me describe our current scenario: all servers have win 2012 installed, we are using RDS as aremote desktop session mode and we are using User Disk Profile in the collection. Right now, we are using redirecting profiles for AppData, Desktop, Documents, Downloads, Favorites; Music, Pictures and My Music follow the documents folder. We are not using roaming profile because we are using User disk profile (VHDx) new feature of Windows 2012.

Our current servers are:

1 RDSAdmin (console managment)

1 RDSCB (Connection Broker) - This server has the following roles: Connection Broker, Web Access, Gateway and Licensing.

2 RDS (RDS Host)

2 User Disk profile Servers - These servers are hosting the vhdx files for our sessions. The main server is replicating to the other user disk profile server using DFSR technologies. I didnt see any errors on this server about user profile.

Thanks!!!

RemoteFX install problem, what else should I try?

$

This question seems to have been asked several times, but none of the answers seem to fix my experience.

#1 - My CPU support SLAT

#2 - dxdiag says I have DirectX 11 and WDDM 1.2

#3 - I have Remote Desktop Virtualization Host role enabled

In Hyper-V manager Hyper-V settings, physical GPU, the GPU combo box is grayed out.

So I'm left with the question, what else is blocking use of RemoteFX?

Thanks!

We have the following configuration

Windows 2008 R2 Server running Remote Desktop Host service

Windows 2008 R2 Server Running Remote Desktop Web Gateway

ISA 2006 Sp1

We are trying to configure SSO via user certificates on ISA .

So far we published the RDWEB server through ISA with user's certificate , but if we try to set the publishing using "kerberos authentication" in the rule it fails .

We have set the firewall server's computer account as trusted for delegation in AD .

Can anyone help with such configuration with an example ?

thanks
