Windows 2008 R2 - RDP session - Clipboard/Copy/Paste function stripping files during transfer....

Hello all,

Im currently working on a project where I have to built and prepare three VM's hosting 2008R2 server on a group of server appliances configured as a SAN.

One of the issues I currently have which has put a stop to proceedings is RDP sessions with the VM's from a WindowsXP Pro laptop stripping files during file transfer.

The summary is as follows: I can only access the VM's through RDP or VMWare client console session. In the console session I have no ability to stranfer software for installation, additionally the Dell Poweredge hardware Im working with doesnt register any USB Flash storage devices when plugged in. That leaves the RDP connection to transfer the necessary software for installation server side.

I have succesfully managed to transfer various small files in their native format including AdobeX.exe (pdf reader) server side, then install successfully.

Trying to transfer a zipped or unpacked variants of a 2.05GB sized software installation ISO of a piece of software which is required to be hosted on the servers however is not copying files like for like. At first I didn't notice that the file size of the folder and underlying structure had been reduced so when running the software installation package a number of pre-requisite software steps were unavailable but the core software and services installed ok. Once it was discovered that the installation missed a number of required steps I had to uninstall and figure out what had gone wrong.

I tried to transfer the folder again but on completion the 2.05GB file had been reduced to 500MB! So obviously sub-folders and files have been stripped during the process. I then tried it with a zipped ISO version and that also reduced the overall file size during the transfer.

Renaming file extensions (.exe to .txt, etc) didnt make any difference. Firewall has been disabled during this process to remove it from the equation. Clipboard in RDP session host manager is enabled and Im using the local admin account to log in to the RDP session. The servers are not going to be part of an AD/Domain therefore each hosting appliance is being set up as a standalone and part of a workgroup, no special security policy and/group permissions have been applied from default, so I dont think this factors in, but I could be wrong.

Any ideas as to why this is happening? I'm not aware that there is a file size limit when using the clipboard, is this the cause perhaps?

Any help will be much appreciated.

Kind Regards
