No font smoothing (apparently) via RDP

Running a remote desktop via RDP (in 32-bit mode, and with all the performance options turned on using a Windows 7 client, including font smoothing on) it looks hideously grainy. This is especially noticeable in Outlook 2013, all the fonts look like they have no smoothing on them whatsoever, and it's not very pleasant to look at.

Any ideas where I should start looking at the culprit for this issue?

I fired up gpedit.msc and checked that Administrative Templates - Windows Components - Remote Desktop Services - Remote Desktop Session Host - Do not allow font smoothing wasn't enabled, and even tried disabling it with no effect.

Type looks great in the machine console, but via RDP it's hideous. Help?
