Problem with reinstall RDS (Terminal Services)

I have Windows Server 2019 with the Terminal Services installed (RD Connection Broker, RD Licencing, RD Session Host and RD Web Access). Unfortunately, by accident, I removed the Default web site from the IIS server where RD Web Access was installed. I have attempted to reinstall RDS services. I was able to easily uninstall all RDS services except RD Web Access.

There is a 0x800f0922 error when I try to uninstall Web Access from Server Manager. Similarly, if I use PowerShell to remove the role (Uninstall-WindowsFeature -name RDS-Web-Access).

PS C:\Windows\system32> Uninstall-WindowsFeature -name RDS-Web-Access

Creating Collections for Single Server RDS Deployment

Building out a single server RDS 2016 deployment.

Can I create multiple Collection (need 3 in total) for about 20 users

When I click create collection no Rd Session host appears. I have a single host for all RDS rolls.

If not going to work in single server env - what is the best way to setup my scenario?

I have 20 users that would require 3 collections.

Standard Apps

Standard Apps + Specific Office Plugins

Standard Apps + Different Apps

I wanted to build three collections and then assign the users to 1 of the three so we deploy the minimum each users needs, and some groups that dont need certain apps dont get them.

Thanks,

Windows RDS Server 2019 looking for Windows 2016 Licensing Server

This is the most ridiculous thing I've ever seen.  Our DC is Windows Server 2019 and we have a member server Windows Server 2019 as our RDS Server.  I couldn't get the RDS server to see the DC running the RDS Licensing role, so I installed the RDS Licensing role on the RDS server, activated it and installed the 10 per user pack. It obvious can't see itself, but what is even more weird is that it's asking for a Windows 2016 Licensing server when it should be looking for a Windows Server 2019 Licensing server. What is really sad is that MS support isn't trained on Windows Server 2019 (BTW, a released product), so us as a MS Partner can't support our customers who embrace Windows Server 2019.  If anyone has any ideas, I'd be open to a conversation.

Keep Audio subsystems active on logged user after RDP session closes (server 2016)

As per the title, I'm using a windows server 2016 as a host for relaying an audio stream. Everything works perfectly when an RDP session is active (and the sound is playing on remote device), however it immediately stops after disconnecting from RDP.

My guess is some of the audio services is stopped after RDP is killed, but I can't figure out a way to overcome this :(

RD is terminated before even starting, Access is Denied.

I've been having this error for while now, I connect to one of the servers and it starts doing its thing apparently going through every step just fine but then I get this Access is denied message:

Normally I wouldn't bother trying to fix it because I don't have the time nor the resources to throw at it, I just snapshot the machine back to a working state, files will are centralized in non-Microsoft redundant servers, they are safe. However, when I tried snapshotting back this VM way back to the beginning of the month the error was still there. I figured, it's a domain issue then, so I took it out of the domain and it still wouldn't let me in.

I connected to the machine's console (via Fusion, it's hosted on ESXi) and checked the log.

There was nothing descriptive except for a "reason code 12" which I knew meant basically nothing because I had looked for it before when this started happening, so I went deeper since my snapshot safety is over I need to know how's it fixed.

Most of the RDS related branches in the tree were empty but in Microsoft/Windows/RemoteDesktopServices-RdpCoreTS/Operational I found some data, actually a ton, 50+ events per connection attemp. They all occur in the same second. I started following the messages, the one where everything fails is:

Disconnect trace:CUMRDPConnection Disconnect trace:'calling spGfxPlugin->PreDisconnect()' in CUMRDPConnection::PreDisconnect at 4477 err=[0xc], Error code:0xC

Here's a table of the logs I made copying them one by one, I tried adding it here but exceeded the message length: http://fetch.vitanetworks.link/stationary/technet/eventlogerror.pdf it's a PDF, so it should show right in the browser.

Using the system with another account reveals the user that failed to log in, tho whom access was denied, is somehowstill logged in. I was informed this when I tried to restart the computer and the warning I would kick other users out showed up. No configuration has been changed on the server, on DCs/GPOs, on the client, nor on the hypervisor. And of course I have no idea what does that graphics thing mean.

The other directory with events was on Microsoft/Windows/RemoteDesktopServices-SessionServices/Operational with a way more decent 2 events per connection attempts:

1    Error        The RDP display control module failed to change the session monitor layout. The operation failed with error code 0xFFFFFFFF.
2    Information    The RDP display control module successfully changed the session monitor layout. New layout has 1 monitors.

And that's all the info I have. Could you point me where to go next to get more information or how to proceed from here? I don't want to reinstall Windows, I put way too much time on these machines. :/

Thanks for your help!

Black Screen for Users in RDS 2016

$

0
Windows Server 2016 RDS setup with one DC and 3 session host servers, all running as VMs under Citrix XenServer. This is a session-based deployment for RDP sessions.

Occasionally (that means approx every 7-10 days), new users logging in to RDS get a
black screen. That is, they can successfully log in but then see only a black screen, no task bar, nothing. Users can see moving mouse cursor, and they can bring up the Task Mgr with Ctrl+Alt+End. Sometimes, after 10-15 minutes the user desktop becomes visible, but most of the
time it never does.

Normally, every additional user logging in after this occured also gets the black screen. The only solution is to reboot this session host server.

The servers are updated to PT (July 2018).

Note - I installed an additional session host server recently and noticed that this phenomena does not seem to happen on that one (at least not as frequent). Same update status but was installed from later download media (evaluation edition download from internet, then converted to Standard edition by inputting a license). They do, however, all show the same build number in the settings app: 14393.2248.

So is it recommended to make a new install for all session host servers? Do not really understand why I would have to do that. They have the same update level, just one was installed from a later base media - but it's the same edition. Doesn't a server end up with an identical setup no matter what original media file was used, with all the updates? That should be the point of the updates, or not?

Or is there any other underlying reason for the black screen phenomenon which I should address?

HowTo Server 2016: Clicking on link in an RDS session and having it open a browser on local machine

$

I've seen this asked before but haven't seen a definitive answer.  A client is running in an RDS on Server 2016.  They open Outlook within their RDS session and click on a link in an email.  When clicking on the link, is it possible for that action to be redirected to the local browser, instead of the browser in the RDS sessions?  Hoping that over the years, a policy or setting has been added that allows for this.

The reasoning is that the RDS Server may not have the graphics hardware to support video streaming (such as YouTube), while the local client does.

Thanks!

Alan

Error message: Your password may have expired or the remote pc might not accept blank passwords

When connecting from Windows 10 Home to Windows 10 Pro using the RD app, I get a message "Your password may have expired or the remote pc might not accept blank passwords". My password has not expired (I tried changing it and using the new password), and I am definitely not sending a blank password (the credentials are not saved, and I type them in every time).

Using the desktop app works, but it cuts off after a few seconds, but that's a different issue. When connected, the connection is shown as 'Excellent', so I am not having Internet connection issues.

Cannot install CALs on Windows Server 2016 (CALs that were included with the purchase)

Good day, I had purchased a Windows Server 2016 Standard license in October, and the one I purchased is with the following title:

Windows Server 2016 Standard 10-Client Access License (English)

I have activated the server successfully, but when I try adding the CALs in RD licensing manager, I get an error that the license code is not recognized. I figure that it's looking for a CAL purchase license code. But according to the title I thought I had purchased Windows Server including 10 CALs. Am I wrong? Or how do I go about licensing the CALs?

Thank you very much in advance for any help. I've spent hours online looking for a solution and even with MS support on the phone, but I am not getting any helpful information.

Kind regards, Timmy.

Disconnect from RemoteApp without exiting app?

Hello,

I have a situation where users need a program to be constantly running (it does overnight data polling from a point-of-sale system) but they want to access it remotely. I'd like to use RemoteApp since it is simpler than Remote Desktop/Virtual Desktop, but I want to make sure they can easily close RemoteApp sessions without actually killing the app. Possible?

The app is GUI only, and yes, I understand it is stupid that the polling system does not run as a service. It is a very old, proprietary program. I couldn't find in any documentation on RemoteApp whether it could do this or not.

Thanks!

Create new restricted user folders

$

Is there any difference applying NTFS permissions directly on a volume vs on a folder?

I have terminal servers with 2008, 2012 and 2016 where people are working with restricted use data. There is a scratch volume for temporary files. When a user logs in the first time, a script runs that creates a folder with their name at the root of the volume. The Creator Owner user is set at the volume to have full control over subfolders and files only, so the new user is the only person who can get into their new folder (besides the server admins). None of these folders are shared out. That's been working as intended.

I've created a new shared folder at the root called Transfer. I'm trying to replicate the process above so that users can transfer files from their desktop but still only have access to their own folder. I've set up the Transfer folder with the same permissions as the volume, but I'm not able to create my user folder under it when I log in with a non-admin user account. I get an "Access is denied" error.

Any thoughts? Thanks.

Restrict to Remote Apps only

Hi,

I have several applications published by RemoteApps from Windows Server 2008 Enterprise to the internet. Port 3389 is open, and the clients have the programs packaged as MSI files.

I want to be able to prevent users from connecting to the normal desktop (ie. connect via standard RDP and get a full desktop) - so they can only run the specified remote apps.

I cant find any way of setting this.

Can anyone help?

Many Thanks,

Ben

Hey guys,

I have a windows 10 machine that I am trying to get connected to a server 2016 server via RDP.Whenever we try to connect the rdp client tells us that we cannot connect to the remote server. I looked at event viewer on the server and cannot seeing any sort of attempt to login. I cannot see anything saying that the client is trying to connect to the server in the security log, or in the RDP logs.I see nothing on the logs on the end users computer. I also can't see something in services or installed programs that would be preventing this. where would you suggest looking?

After installing 2018-11 Cumulative Update for Windows Server 2016 (1709) for x64-based Systems (KB4467681) on our RDS servers the outlook 2013 search bar does not work, clicking on the magnifying glass does nothing.

Going to advanced find and searching there works.

Search works again after uninstalling update.

Remote Desktop Fails as soon as a RDS Collection is Created

$

0

Abbreviated Problem:

As soon as I create a RDS application collection I am unable to use any remote desktop services.  Reboot has no effect. Security Layer is set to "Negotiate" and Encryption Level is "client compatible".  Prior to creating the collection standard RDP works; after it is created, however, RDP (including remote apps) fail to connect with the error :

Likewise, Immediately upon deleting the collection, Remote Desktop begins working again.

-This is a quick setup RDS deployment that exists only on one virtual Server 2016 instance.

___________________

Additional info:

The collection was working as intended for several months but I discovered that the above error would occur for all users and devices after a reboot of the RDS server or after a restart of the remote desktop services on the RDS server.  Heeding the advice of a RDS forum I deleted the application collection and thought my troubles were behind me once remote desktop began to work again.. wrong.. As soon as a new RDS collection is created the error returns for all connections.  I initially created the collection over an RDP connection and thought that might be the cause but the issue remains even when using a vmware console while creating the collection.

Obviously my RDP ports are open from the client computers to the RDS since RDP works after the collection is deleted -windows firewall is also off.

Hoping someone with more expertise and experience with RDS can help here.

How to divert users to specific session host that runs an application

$

I have a need to divert users of an application to a specific Session host as the software is only installed on one of my 4 session hosts. I need this as the software can only be installed on this particular session host.

I'm using RemoteApp on users workstations to publish the application to them, but the issue i have is the connection is going to the other hosts without the software installed. For external connections i know i could try using the rap and cap policies but these are internal users on my private network.

Does anyone else do something similar or know how i can set this up...?

Thanks

hello guys,

i'm having this problem only when trying to log into windows 2012 RDS servers(2003,2008 are fine) were space and backslash is added to the front of the UPN.

For example:

I save my UPN david@mydomain.com in my remote desktop connection settings. Then when i try to remote into my RDS windows 2012 servers this what is added in the username field " \david@mydomain.com" without the double quotes and therefore i get the error message "The user name or password is incorrect. Try again.". When i remove the space and backslash i can remote in just fine. I have looked everywhere and no one has been able to bring up solution. Please help!
