Remote Desktop Users cannot login to RDS sessions

$

Hello,

I have a fairly standard Windows Server 2016 standard here which refuses every user who is not an Administrator login via RDS:

Failure Information:
Failure Reason:The user has not been granted the requested logon type at this machine.
Status: 0xC000015B
Sub Status: 0x0

What I did:

  1. Installed server
  2. Installed AD
  3. Installed RDS roles session host and licensing manager only (not the "Remote Desktop Service Installation")
  4. Installed licenses.
  5. Everything worked. Users (non-administrators) in group "domain users" could login (after allowing it obviously)
  6. Realized, that the remote host management mmc (the one available up to server 2008r2) is not available without the full installation of gateways etc via the installation wizard
  7. run the  "Remote Desktop Service Installation", filled all the fields.
  8. Added Group "domain users" to the allowed user groups in Server Manager|RDS|Collections|my collection|Properties
  9. No login possible.

I read the forums and i think I tried everything and wonder if this might be a bug. I welcome advice what to do, maybe I forgot something or how to somehow reset the whole mess without re-installing the server.

Greetings everyone.

We are using an application with RemoteApp.
We had no issues with Windows Server 2012R2.
Installing the very same application on a Server 2016 Standard (new rds farm on WS2016), weird things started happening.

When a user is minimized or switching another application (full screen mode) the window goes freeze or show strange stripes.

If you right click on it choose expand/deploy the application normalize

Problem аppears on 10-20% workstation with different OS or CPU or Videocard or Screen resolution.

Thank you all for any help you could provide me.

Windows 2016 Server RDWEB - Office 2016 RemoteApp (access via Windows 10 Pro)

I have a Remote Desktop Host Session setup using Windows 2016 Server and install Office 2016 Standard on to the server. I configured RDWEB on the server for client that are using Internet Explorer in Windows 10 Pro to access all RemoteApp advertised via RDWEB.

The issue is that when I launch any Office Application (e.g. Word, Excel, etc), the windows of the app is in maximize state but it is not in full screen where there is a small gap on top and left side of the windows. The windows looks a little bit off and I can see the status bar is behind the task bar of the client machine (screenshot - hxxps://1drv.ms/i/s!AkDMTDPrqMYAhagiH1G0hmXD-7V2sA).

Other RemoteApp such as Internet Explorer, Paint, and all other 3rd party application works fine and get a full screen without the gap when maximize the application window. The only issue is with all Office 2016 application.

Note that I have tried to fresh installed all the component (Windows 2016 Standard Server, Office 2016 Standard and Windows 10 Pro) to avoid any other probability.

The issue does appear if I'm using the same setup / configuration but with Windows 2012 R2 Server as Remote Desktop Host.

Appreciate some help from the expert here. Thank you. :)

DRIVER=SQL Server Native Client 11.0;SERVER=ax-bi-sql;Trusted_Connection=Yes;APP=Remote Desktop Services Connection Broker;Database=RDSBrokers

Folder to store database file :
E:\SQL2014

DNS round robin name:
rds.mondomain.local

But I get an error :

I do not know why. Please could you help me ?

Thanks a lot.

During RD session, video-window, on remote desktop, interferes with the GUI events of the app that hosts the video...

$

There is a Windows PC which is running an application that displays video from a camera. The video updates at between 10 and 25 Hz. When I'm at that PC, the application is very responsive. If I remote-desktop to that same PC, then the application becomes extremely sluggish; scrolling over the app's menu-bar reveals that the app is not responding to mouse-events (while scrolling over the menu-bar of, say, Windows Explorer behaves normally). However, if (within the RD session) I reposition the remote application's window such that the embedded-video is off-screen, then the application starts responding to mouse-events normally.  Similarly, dragging another window (on remote PC) over the video-window also causes the app to run freely.

This behavior makes it impossible to use the video-application on the remote desktop.

Any help is appreciated.

The "change user /install" procedure, still matters?

$

The change user /install and change user /execute are still in use today?

In moden deployments , like WIn2012, 2016 (and soon 2019), is "change user" commands  useful?

As far as I know, most of the SETUP procedures are detected and treated as TS install procedures automacally

Windows Server 2016 -> Start menu reachable via Published Apps

Case:
I published several apps on our Windows Server 2016 via RDS.
I connected to our apps via an iPad.
Via the onscreen keyboard of the iPad I could press the Windows Key when magically the Start menu appeared.
I couldn't start an app when I tried to start one via the touchscreen but I managed to do start any application installed on the RDS server via the onscreen keyboard Arrows + Enter key on the iPad.

I could also reach the Task Manager and select the Run command (example Explorer.exe)
Looks like The published apps is just a RDP connection with auto start of the application and with the Start taskbar removed from first sight.

Does anyone have the same issue or does anyone know a solution?

Tools:
Windows Server 2016
RDS role
Publish Apps (Any app)
iPad for connecting to a published app.

Do I need an RDS Gateway

Hi we are setting up a TS farm with 6x 2016 RDSH servers an 2x 2016 HA connection broker servers to a single SQL instance to handle load balancing through a DNS round robin. My questions are a) Do we need an RD gateway as all articles i have read about RDS deployment seem to have it form part of the load balancing? Secondly if we do need it can this be installed to one of the broker servers

cannot run remoteApp when added others RDSH!

Hi All,
I have followed some guide and succesfully to built a testlab RDS, but still have confuse one thing about RemoteApp / RDSH . Here my server info:

+ server 2 running role RDWEB , RD Gateway

All is worked fine, RemoteApp can access from internal / external .

but if i add 1 more server to running RDSH , and created collection for this server. All new RemoteApp visible on RDWEB ( both 2 RDSH) , but cannot run remoteapp drom new RDSH with information: "your computer cannot connect to the remote computer because a error occurred on the remote computer that you want to connect to..."
Do i miss somthing to config on RDWEB ? or anything else ?

2012 r2 Server Manger cannot manage RDS: Collections, Host Servers, and Connections won't display

Hello,

We have a 2012 r2 server running RDS publishing a number of RemoteApps.

When we go to the Server Manager and drill down to the Remote Desktop Services area we are seeing a number of the sections that will not display their information and we can no longer manage RDS via Server Manager.

Starting at Server Manager\Remote Desktop Services\Overview the "Deployment Servers" window shows a red banner with "Could not refresh the list of servers"

Going to the Server Manager\Remote Desktop Services\Collections, all three of the windows, Collections, Host Servers, and Connections will eventually display the similar type of error message, stating to check the status of the services for Remove Desktop Connection, Windows Remote Management and Windows Internal Database.

server manager error

The server is fully patched, event logs don't show anything of note.

We've rebooted the server and confirmed all those services and all "Remote Desktop *" services are running.

We're still able to access the RDWeb instance to use the published applications.

This had been working previously, not sure when it last was though as we don't always go into Server manager. We can manage the remoteapps via powershell, but are curious why Server Manager no longer functions.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

thanks...

Is there any limit on the amount of published applications on a RD Server?

Hello everybody.

We have an old Citrix farm, there each published application points to an Excel file (an individually customized BI report). Around 500 applications we have there.

So now we migrating this repository to a new RDS 2016 deployment, based on the Windows Server 2016 Standard x64.

We've created a PowerShell script, which make this publications automatically.

But after publication of around 60 RD apps Server manager stops responding, and RDS stops functioning. We've tried to reproduce this behavior under the Windows Server 2012 Standard x64 deployment - same result.

We've deployed 58 RD apps, and started to add RD apps one by one manually. Same result, after the publication of 61 or 63 Server manager stops refreshing, High Availability (but not necessary) RD Connection broker stops responding, and all the RD apps stops functioning.

An example of 23 published apps here:

RD apps

It obvious that I could provide two files: the .ps script and the .ini so anyone could reproduce this situation (publish dummy RD apps) in their environment to check the situation... But would you? )

Logoff Scripts dont run on TS RemoteApp logoff - Windows 2008 Bug????

$

I noticed someone else asked this question, and was given an answer that implied logoff scripts should run with TS remoteApp. But I'm having a similar problem

Logon scripts work fine when launching a remoteApp session, but when the RemoteApp is closed and the session logs off shortly afterwards (i have this set to logoff  'immediately' via GPO) it seems clear to me that that logoff scripts do not run at all

Its interesting because the "Microsoft-Windows-GroupPolicy/Operational" Log on the terminal server shows:
"Completed Logoff script for DOMAIN\test.user in 0 seconds"

But as far as i can tell, no attempt whatsoever is made to call the logoff script

I used Process monitor on the terminal server to filter anything containing "my.domain.com\policies". this should show me when any GPO is accessed
Suffice to say I can lots of activity to this location during RemoteApp logon, when all the logon policies apply. But i'm seeing absolutely NOTHING during the RemoteApp session logoff, after the RemoteApp is closed.

For testing I have just a simple logon / logoff script that just calls "cscript.exe" with no parameters. I've also used process monitor to look for that during logon and logoff with the same nonexistent result during logoff

Logging on and off from a full RDP desktop session to the same server gives me the expected result. logon and logoff scripts work as expected, and process monitor shows me everything i'd expect to see.

Just in case this was some problem with policy loopback processing not happening correctly, I've tried placing the logoff part of this script in user section of both the user policy (the policy linked to the the user objects OU), and the looped back computer policy (the policy linked to the TS computer OU)

So far, everything i've done demonstrates that windows makes no attempt to call the logoff script when the remoteapp session is logged off after the app is closed.

Anyone from MS care to comment on this?

Its particularly annoying as I cant use terminal server flex profiles without logoff scripts.
Logoff scripts are used to export user setting from the current user registry, so they can imported again during the next users logon.

Not being able to execute anything during logoff cripples my implementation.

Any suggestions?

After update on client station are RemoteAPP slower, and  right mouse button is unresponsive, or react verly long time...

It is a big problem for us.

PS: after replace mstsc.exe and mstscax.dll from older version Windows 10 is all OK. but this is not a solution.

Thanks.

Questions regarding licencing of multiple RDP sessions with same user on single terminalserver

Hello,

if you have one terminalserver and disable this key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\ System\ CurrentControlSet\ Control\fSingleSessionPerUser

so that you can have multiple sessions for one user, how do you licence this?

I guess this is not covered by just one User CAL. Do I need a User CAL for every paralell session?

How is this handled?

Using Remote Desktop Services with Citrix PVS or VMWARE Composer

Anyone use RDS 2012 with Citrix PVS or VMWARE Composer? Any documents or blogs that might have some insight into the subject? I am just looking to have the RDS Session Host servers on a Citrix PVS type disk so we can make sure all of them are exactly the same.

TIA for any info.

Sizing guidance for RDCB, RDWeb and RDGateway

$

Hi all,

putting together a HA RDS farm design - and im having trouble finding guidance on sizing for RD Connection brokers, RD Web and RD Gateway servers.

I get the for the session hosts, it is very dependant on what is running within the sessions and hence, the lack of hardware sizing guidance.

For the other roles it would be nice to have some sort of general advice - i.e. 1 connection broker per 1000 users, 1 RDGateway per 200 users etc....

Does anyone know if sizing guidance such as this exists? (and I just haven't been able to find it)

Hi,

I've just deployed a new RDS collection for at customer, and i wanted to use HTML5 version for RDweb. It works great, and performs well - however i do have a problem...

@ and \ are not working - the work fine when i connect the same user to the same server with the remotedesktop application (MSTSC)

I have tried Ctrl + Alt solution as well as the AltGr    (I normally use a danish Keyboard)

I have tried switching my local keyboard and locale to English

any thougts? i might be forced to revert to the legacy remote web - but i'd rather not.
