Do I need an RDS Gateway

Hi we are setting up a TS farm with 6x 2016 RDSH servers an 2x 2016 HA connection broker servers to a single SQL instance to handle load balancing through a DNS round robin. My questions are a) Do we need an RD gateway as all articles i have read about RDS deployment seem to have it form part of the load balancing? Secondly if we do need it can this be installed to one of the broker servers

Performance issues when using RDS 2016 in Azure with Azure AD DS and Azure App Proxy

Hello,

Ihave the following in Azure:

1 Server 2016 RDS Session host server - contains the RDS Broker & Licensing roles

1 Server 2016  RDS Web & Gateway server that conatins the web and gateway roles in addition to the application proxy connector.

1 Server 2016 Broker and licensing server.

The three servers are in the new (Resource Manager) portal.

I've set up a non-overlapping VNET and Azure AD DS in the classic portal. I've also set up application proxies for the RD web and Gateway roles.

Everything works fine. The only issue I have is the connection quality. When I RDP straight into the RDS server, connection quality is fine and there is no lag when inputting text in to a document, moving windows, etc.

When I access the RDS server via the application proxy, connection quality is 'good' and I experience lag inputting text, moving windows, etc.

My question is, is this normal? I suspect it's due to the fact that the application proxy can only work on https(443) and RDS2016 requires both HTTPS (443) and UDP 3391 to perform optimally?

If not, then how can I improve performance? Thanks

I've been through the documentation but cannot find anything that would indicate why the connection wuality drops when using the proxy. I have tried both passthrugh and Azure Preauthentication for the RDweb application as well.

Thanks,

HA20

RD Session is dropped out after several seconds of being idle

Hi guys,

Faced with this issue.

There an RD Gateway (Windows Server 2016 Datacenter) and RDS (Windows Server 2016 Standard) servers in Azure.

Some users when connect to the RDS server from home get disconnected if remote session is left idle for even several seconds.

I have another RDS server that is deployed without RD Gateway server involvement and if the same users from the same location connected to the other server they don't get disconnected.

With that being said I narrowed down the potential issue around RD Gateway server but can't figure out what exactly should be checked to rectify the issue.

I tried to add DWORD key RDGClientTrasport” with a value of 1 under "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Terminal Server Client" but, unfortunately,  that didn't work.

Is there anything else that should be checked?

Please advise.

Regards

Server 2016 End Disconnected Session for particular account not working

I am using a remote Server 2016 VPS from a provider and wish to configure a  user account Test to terminate after 1 hour of being disconnected. From the server Admin account I have accessed Computer Management -> Local Users and Groups-> Users -> Test and in the Sessions tab of account properties set Ends a Disconnected Session to 1 hr. However, the disconnected Test session does not close after 1 hr of disconnection. (As shown by Task Manager-> Users which shows the Test account in a disconnected state after more than 1 hr of disconnection.)  I have restarted the server and disconnection still does not occur after 1 hr. Is there something else I need to do?

Users are displayed in RD Gateway Manager But not in Session Collections

I am having an issue with my RD Gateway deployement where the only users shown connected through the Gateway server in collections are admin users connected directly to the gateway server. Users connecting externally to their workstations are not show under session collections but are shown as being connected in the RD Gateway Manager. There is some functionality in the session collections manager that I would like to use. Is there a solution for this and/or am I doing something wrong? I will note that we are running a single Windows Server 2016 installation with a single session collection. Thanks in advance.

Server 2016 Session IDs 0

I recently setup a brand new server 2016 RDS Farm. The issue I am having is that one of the servers is showing session IDs of zero. This is the same issue I was having with our server 2012 R2 farm. That is why I wanted to replace the old farm with the new one. I have been through so many documents that spelled out possible solutions, but none of them has fixed my issue. It is a simple setup. One server has the license server, broker, gateway, and session host. The other two have just the session host installed. The server I am having trouble with is the one with just the Session Host installed I have tried rebooting the broker server to no effect. Other things I have tried are removing the server in question from the collection and then removing it from the deployment and then re-adding it back in. The server IS added to the “RDS Management Servers” group in AD. I even went so far as removing the server off of the domain, uninstalling the remote desktop role, re-adding it back into the domain, and then installing the remote desktop roles again. The server is still showing session IDs of zero. At this point I am at a loss as how to fix this issue. Any help would be immensely appreciated because I need to get this new farm into production as soon as I can.

one of my colleagues made the installation oft he RD Licenseserver with phone registration but in ours case we had to use normal mode. So we can enter the amount of licenses manually.<o:p></o:p>

We have to do that because we had a campus aggreement. <o:p></o:p>

Is that possible and without interruption of user connections ?<o:p></o:p>

Remote Desktop Services access restriction via IP

Hi All,

I have a remote desktop deployment which consists of RD Connection Broker, RD Gateway, and RD Services or Terminal servers, all run on Windows Server 2012 R2

The deployment works well, access is granted via an AD groups

My question is if its possible to restrict access to these groups to the RDS deployment via an IP address or a range of IP addresses, NPS is installed on the Gateway but i don't seem to be able to get the right settings for this to work, are their any guidelines for this?

Thanks

RDP8+, "Your computer can't connect to the remote computer because an error occurred"

Ok, I have racked my brain trying to figure this out and I'm out of ideas.

Issue - Random Windows 7 PC that has updated to RDP 8.0 gets this error when they try to connect to a server we have set up for them through a gateway.  Only happens when the computer is updated to RDP8.  Downgrading to RDP7.1 fixes the issue and they can connect just fine.

The issue only affect a very small number of computers.  Most Windows 7 computers with RDP 8.0 can connect just fine.  But right now, I am working with a client that has their own computers and domain (I have no control over) that are affected by this issue.  This is not the only client I have run into with this issue as well.

This problem is essentially what is described here - http://www.examiner.com/article/fixing-an-error-occurred-on-the-remote-computer-with-remote-desktop-connection  Except I would really like to know if there is a fix other than uninstalling RDP 8.

Waiting for local session manager when RDP'ing < timeout after 60 seconds

Hello

We have a server with  Windows 2012 R2. It runs Multiple Enterprise SSDs with around 950 subscriptions, 128G ram and 2 x 8 Core intel CPUs. The load on the server is typically low due to the high spec server.

When we RDP to it it times out after 60 seconds. it says "please wait for the local session manager"

I decided to migrate to a new server this week with Windows 2016 std 2 x intel 12 core CPU, 256G Ram and again multiple samsung enterprise SSD disks.  The server is very fast and like before it runs on a low load, cpu/ram/disk IO is never medium/high.

We are now migrating all of our website hosting to it, each hosting user has their own windows user and we dont use AD.

We now have the same issue on Windows 2016, the server isn''t live yet but windows contains over 500 windows users, no one has RDP access and the RDP is locked down by IP to us so its only ever our administrator account that logs in to RDP.

I now can't access the server over RDP due to this issue

What is the cause? why does having lots of windows users stop Administrator from connecting?

Can i make some changes so RDP won't timeout after 60 seconds on this screen so I can wait until it does connect.

When I connect from Console/KVM over IP, I press ALT+CTRL+DEL to login, it takes around 90-100 seconds after before I see login as shown on screencast: https://www.screencast.com/t/btK29WeT

RDS Device Cal Licensing On Azure WIndows Server 2016

Hello,

We have bought 6 device cal licenses and setup the rd licensing server and session host.  The ssession host is activated with the rd licensing server and still when users login, there deivce is not assigned a license.  Is this due to the grace period still being in effect or is there some other reason?  BTW, the session host shows no errors at all and says the licensing server has 6 available licenses

Windows 10 - Remote Web App Display - Windows Distorted after Dragging and/or Maximizing

$

Last week, we retired our Remote Desktop 2012R2 system and launched Remote Desktop 2016 hosting Office 2016 on RDSH 2016 servers.  We have several hundred clients running a variety of systems including IOS, Windows 7, Windows 8.1 and Windows 10 Professional.

A few days after launch, some of our Windows 10 users issued complaints that maximizing, resizing and moving around Remote Web App windows causes all types of distortion including a disappearing window that cannot be maximized again and issues where only a small portion of the full window is displayed.

A sample is shown below where portions of Excel 2016 are cut off in a remote web app session on Windows 10 Pro, version 1803.

We have combed the internet for a fix.  We've tried updating display drivers, Docking Port drivers, updating Windows 10 Pro from version 1709 to 1803.  We've tried unchecking 'use Bitmap cache' in the RD Client.  We've adjusted display resolution, all without any luck.  None of these users have a dual monitor setup.

The issue has cropped up on docked/undocked Dell Latitude laptops.

RemoteAPP after windows 10 update 1803 are slow and right mouse button is not responding (it reacts only sometimes)

Hi,

our workstations with Windows 10 pro are in this weekend updated to version 1803. For main system we use RemoteAPP aplications on Windows server 2012R2 (Windows server 2012R2 is full updated). After update on client station are RemoteAPP slower, and  right mouse button is unresponsive, or react verly long time...

It is a big problem for us.

PS: after replace mstsc.exe and mstscax.dll from older version Windows 10 is all OK. but this is not a solution.

Thanks.

Unable to always connect to the disconnected RemoteApp session with the same user on Windows 2012 R2

Hi -

We have a standalone Win2012 R2 server as well as a RDCB with a load-balanced setup with 2 Win2012 R2 servers. We use ActiveX control to launch remote application by initiating a RemoteApp services session. However, when the users are allowed to disconnect as the application launched remotely can run for several hours so we CANNOT put a time limit to close disconnected session(s). Anyhow, we have just been unable to have these users connect back to the same disconnected session...strangely its very inconsistent i.e. it sometimes re-connects to the same disconnected session that the user had previously created, but on other occasions (which is most of the time), it creates a new RemoteApp session with the same user. We've exhausted all options and unable to find an resolution.

One of the questions we need clarification is, is RemoteApp services different in its behavior than Remote Desktop services?

We've tried setting the option of 'Restrict Remote Desktop Services users to a single Remote Desktop Services session'. Like mentioned above, we CANNOT set a time limit to close disconnected sessions, so thats out of the question. Also assuming Remote Desktop services behaves differently than RemoteApp services, would this particular setting even work in case of RemoteApp services?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Wildcard Certificates and RDS 2012R2

Hi,

I have a built an RDS farm in a domain using .local for the server hosts, I have a wildcard certificate that resolves to rdsserverfarm.com.

Can I use the wildcard cert for all servers within deployment properties and rename the connection broker to match?

What is the best method for this type of deployment?

Thanks

Redirect USB scale through RDP

$

We have a machine that is running our shipping software with a scale. The software goes out to a SQL server and pulls some data. This makes the application run very slow as the node is distant from the SQL server.

To get around this, we are running the application through an RDP window on the RDS server (which is on the same rack). However, now the scale that is hooked to the local machine doesn't populate the weight in the shipping application.

so far I have tried:

1. Making sure "ports and other plugnplay" devices is checked in the RDP session setup.

Any other ideas on this?
