How does one specify licensing mode in RDS on Server 2016

$

In RD Licensing Diagnoser on Server 2016, I get a message that the licensing mode for the Remote Desktop Session Host server is not configured. How does one set this. I cannot find the "RD Session Host Configuration Tool" like I we have used in the past with Windows Server 2008 R2 to accomplish this task.

Thanks

Dear Friends,

I have a Terminal Server as below configuration

RDCB - with connection broker, web access and licensing server role

RDS1 - Host Server

RDS2 - Host Server

RDS3 - Host Server

RDS4 - Host Server

I have created 3 Collection:

RDFarm - hosted RDS1 and RDS2

CDFarm - hosted on RDS3

ISFarm - Hosted on RDS4

RDFarm and CDFarm are Remote Desktop servers, whereas ISFarm has a published app i.e. Google chrome.  Whenever I try to connect to the ISFarm via connection broker https://rdcb/rdweb I am getting a messege "There are no available computers in the pool. Try connecting again or contact your network administrator."

I have already tried the followings:

- https://www.360ict.nl/blog/2012r2-connection-broker-error-24584-adding-collections/ this warning was fixed.

- RDFArm and CDFarms are working fine with no issues.

- Reinstalled the roles.

- created a signed certificate for the ISfarm

with no success.

Please help.

Detect when Client Printer Redirection completes? Error 3012 No printers were found

$

We've implemented some automatic printer connections to a Windows network print server (via AddPrinterConnection Windows API) into our RemoteApp application immediately after it launches, not unlike a login script.  In other words, when users launch the RemoteApp, it automatically connects their various \\ps1\printer1, \\ps1\printer2 priners based on who they are and only if they are missing.

What I've discovered is that sometimes AddPrinterConnection fails with error 3012 (0xbc4) No printers were found.  After some playing around, I'm convinced that this is a collision between my calls to AddPrinterConnection and the automatic client printer redirection that occurs when a user connects to a RDHS, which happens in parallel with the launch of the RemoteApp application (this can be witnessed by quickly opening the Devices and printers control panel applet).  If I introduce a delay, there are no more 3012 errors, thus confirming my suspicions.  As some users have many printers and some have none or few, and some printers take much longer than others to redirect, a fixed delay would have to be large to accommodate all scenarios.

How can I detect when the automatic client printer redirection (which is necessary and cannot simply be disabled) completes?  It occurs to me that I could look for DrvInst.exe processes, and wait until there are none before I attempt my own AddPrinterConnection calls, but this seems sloppy.  For starters, one user could be delayed by the DrvInst.exe processes of another user, since they are owned by SYSTEM and I cannot tell which user's printers are being redirected.  I've also noticed that userinit.exe starts upon launching a RemoteApp and eventually terminates, though it does not re-launch when reconnecting to a disconnected RemoteApp session even though client redirected printers indeed reconnect, so it does not seem likely that userinit.exe is directly responsible for them.

Curious if there is a slick way to avoid the collision, or if perhaps the 3012 error can be avoided entirely through another approach.

Thanks in advance!

Software restriction policy bug in Windows 2016

$

I have the following software restriction policy

- Security level : "disallowed"

- Exceptions:

%HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\ProgramFilesDir (x86)%

%HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\ProgramFilesDir%

%programFiles%

%programFiles(x86)%

So far so good for ; users can launch all installed programs and nothing else. (I don't remember why I had to add (%programFiles% and %programFiles(x86)% though. The first two were there by default).

Now, testing the same policy on W2016, there's a problem when clicking a link in Thunderbird. That should launch the default browser (Say, IE or Firefox), but the program is denied (a seen in Event Viewer).

One additional weird thing is that Thunderbird says "this file does not have a program associated...". It's not the the usual popup "Your system administrator has blocked this program..." and I was misled in a Thunderbird issue. Which is not.

I had to add the real paths as exceptions "c:\program files (x86)" and "c:\program files" as workaround.

Copy Paste not working via RDP connection

Hello,

Recently my laptop was upgraded to Windows 10. I work in an enterprise consulting company and when connecting to a Windows Server 2016 of one of our customers via RDP, I am not able to copy/paste between my laptop and the server in the RDP session.

In my RDP connection I have activated "Printers" and "Clipboard" to be used in the remote session.

On the server side the customers IT team tried to fix the copy paste problem but was not able to. They mentioned that on all Windows 2016 server Copy/Paste is not working properly via RDP sessions.

I tried to find a solution online but was unsuccessful.

PS: On the Windows 2016 Server the fDisableClip Registry entry is set to 0. That is correct, afaik.

PPS: Also since I have Windows 10, the passwords are not being saved in the RDP connections, I have to enter them every time I access any host via RDP.

RDS Collection - Security Issue

Hi,

we have a small RDS collection setup (one collection, one session host). We published about 25 remote apps and assigned to the active directory different groups for every remote app.

I assigned my testuser to a random group for a random collection, I downloaded the rdp file from the rdweb portal. Connection is working - eveything is fine.

For testing purposed i simulated a departmental change from the testuser, i deleted him from the active directory group and logged into the rdweb again. I can not see the published app now, that's how it should work.

But now here is my problem - the user isnt in the group anymore but still has the rdp connection file which I downloaded before. If he double-clicks the file is still able to connect to the remote desktop app.

I know it would be much easier if we had a bigger remote desktop environment with multiple session hosts - I would be able to create more collections and set the group permissions there - but this is not possible for several reasons.

Is there any way to prevent this? A user which has moved to another department should not be able to open a remote desktop app from is old department.

Thank you very much.

Regards

Daniel

Redirected printers not showing in Devices and Printer - unable to change defaults

$

We have a Windows Server 2012 Remote Desktop Server and are having problems with redirected printers on it. The problem occurs for users running the RDP client from Windows 7, 8 and 10.

Users are connecting over a WAN connection and are needing to print to their local network printers. The printers are connected successfully to their local workstations, and the option to redirect printers is selected in the RDP client. When users remote connect to the server the local printers show as available from within an application, such as Word, and they can print successfully using them, however they don't show in the Devices and Printers in the remote desktop session.

The problem is they want to change the default settings on the printer to be single-sided B&W and the default is Auto-color, double-sided. This can be changed manually from within the application but it doesn't stick once they log off and back on again.

Following the recommendation from this link:  https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/243942  I was able to change the defaults by going to the redirected printer in Devices and Printers and making the change under both Printing Preferences and Printing Defaults on the printers, then waiting for at least a minute before logging off and the settings are persistent for that user through a logoff and back on again.

We had major printing issues with this server and printers when using the Windows Easy Print driver as they constantly randomly never printed jobs, and Microsoft Support concluded we needed to disable using Windows Easy Print drivers first and load matching drivers on both the local workstation and the server. This resolved the problems they had re the non-printing, but it meant changes to the default settings had to be made on the redirected printer as above, as changing them on the local printer doesn't carry through the redirection.

I was able to configure the redirected printers at the time as they showed up in the Devices and Printers, but for some reason they don't any more. The changed defaults have stayed persistent for users that the change was made on, but they now want it made for new users. Also checking for existing users they no longer have the redirected printers showing up in Devices and Printers either.

There have been no changes to the server that I am aware of that would cause the printers to no longer show up. Directly attached printers show up OK, just not the redirected printer. Checking the device manager does show the print queue for the redirected printer, and as mentioned earlier, it's available to print to.

I thought perhaps copying the registry configuration of a working configured printer and loading that each time a user logs on to the Remote Desktop Server might be an option, but the redirected printers change the redirection number each time so they wouldn't match.

Any thoughts or suggestions about how to either get the redirected printers showing up again, or configure them for persistent defaults would be greatly appreciated.

Cannot RDP to specific host in specific subnet

Hi, I posted this on another forum and was directed here so here goes:

This issue is ripping me a new one so I'd really appreciate any help...

Layout:

desk and test are on subnet 1
frank is on subnet 2
vpn is on its own subnet but is passed subnet 1 in the vpn config (handled by router)

all are windows 10

there is full routing between subnets (pass all traffic)
ping works to all hosts, telnet over 3389 works to all hosts, TightVNC works, just rdp is acting up
window firewall is completely off on frank, desk, and test

test is a completely fresh install of windows with all updates

there is no windows domain or anything and all computers are in "WORKGROUP"

rdp testing table:

_from_ -> _to_ _result_
desk -> test yes
desk -> frank no "the logon attempt failed"

frank -> test yes
frank -> desk yes

test -> desk yes
test -> frank no "connects and show lockscreen but says 'username or passowrd is incorrect try again'"

vpn -> desk yes
vpn -> frank yes
vpn -> test yes

keep in mind telnet 3389 works even when rdp doesn't

for some reason frank is the only one that others cannot connect TO (it can connect to others) and for some reason vpn clients are able to connect to frank.

Troubleshooting:

On frank when I attempt to connect from desk/test I sometimes get the following error in frank's event log:

A CredSSP authentication to TERMSRV/<desk/test ip> failed to negotiate a common protocol version.  The remote host offered version 4 which is not permitted by Encryption Oracle Remediation.

Microsoft recommends this page:
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4093492/credssp-updates-for-cve-2018-0886-march-13-2018

Based on the above, tried setting to "vulnerable" or whatever, no good.

So I update all windows machines to the latest build so now all rdp clients are version 10.0.17134 and it doesn't help at all except now when test fails to connect to frank it has the same message as desk, that is "the logon attempt failed" and no longers shows the logon screen as it did previously.

I also tried creating a new account "test" on frank but that got the same error.

IF i connect frank to subnet 1 everything works fine so I think it is simply something to do with that host being on a differnet subnet. Is there anything I can set to allow rdp even though it is in another subnet. How can I rdp to frank and have it remain in subnet 2? please help!

Issues with HTML 5/Web Cient

$

I'm experiencing an issue that I believe is being caused by the new web client, but I cannot say for certain. Users who attempt to use the web client get stuck at the following step in the login process:

Sometimes they will continue through to a desktop, some users don't get stuck at all, and some will finally see this message:

The same user can connect to the same collection using any other client (Windows Store, iOS, Android, MSTSC, etc.) without any issues. Furthermore, we use LoginPI to monitor the environment (which uses MSTSC for the connection) and it has not experienced a single connection failure. In addition, I can't find any unusual errors in the event logs on the RDS servers that seem to match the connection errors as I would usually expect.

Is there a log I can look at that is generated by the web client or some troubleshooting I can perform? I am in the process of opening a case with MS Premier Tier 3 support (a process I loathe by the way), but I was hoping someone here could help sooner.

Thanks for the help as always!

Hey,

We are running Server2012 Standard, with all patches installed.

Each morning I need to restart the RDS Service as users get a 'Cannot connect to the remote computer as an error occured' message

There's nothing in any event logs, and once i restart the service it it's fine for the whole day... Until the next day, when it happens all over again

Has anyone dealt with this before?

Thanks For your help!

Give normal user access to take over users on Remote Desktop Server via a Remote Desktop Server Gateway

$

Hi all

I have a question regarding a Remote Desktop Server Gateway. We want a user to be able to take over sessions from other users that are connected to the Remote Desktop Server in order to support. But we would like to only give him rights to do that. Is this possible?

I added the user to be able to access the RDSGW via mstsc. When he goes to Servermanager he doesn't have rights to see the collections or take over user sessions.

If this is possible how would I need to go about it?

thanks in advance for any help! It is greatly appreciated!

Remote Desktop into Server 2016 gives black screen. Same issue as bug recently found/fixed in 2012 R2

$

Is anyone aware of a fix to this issue?

See the post from Sasha (Microsoft): here

Here is a post to the MS KB acknowledging and providing a resolution for 2012 R2:here

To resolve the issue when it happens, i need to kill the TermService service (it won't stop normally as it is in a deadlock state). I can then start the service again and it's business as usual until it happens again.

I can't see any info about this in RDS 2016... Anyone else? MS?

Thanks,

Stephen

Hello All,

We have two web servers in our deployment ( 2016 RDS Web) configuration.  Initially i was able to access internally using https://Webserver1.domain.com/rdweb. and https://webserver2.domain.com/rdweb. But when i had a pool in F5 ( with the both web servers as pool members) and redirecting the route should go to either of the Web servers RD web portal but It's not happening.

Please Suggest.
